NY GIS K12 webinar: Learn how you can use this technology in your classroom

On Tuesday, March 6^th at 6:30 pm there will be a webinar on “Learning how to use GIS in your classroom.” Please share with any K-12 educators who you think might be interested in this. Coming up we will offer a webinar that is targeted at administrative uses of the technology for K-12 schools.

As part of New York’s Esri statewide K-12 license agreement, this is part of a series of webinars offered to help educators see how GIS is currently being used in classrooms in New York and across the country. Following these GIS Education Awareness webinars, hands-on training will be offered across the New York.

LaFayette STEP Program Seeking Professionals to work with students

Attention Retired Technology Teachers! This might be of interest to you:

I am writing to you from the LaFayette STEP Program. The LaFayette Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) is one of 60 STEP programs in New York State. Serving 80 students in grades 7-12, our STEP program is a collaboration of the New York State Department of Education, Morrisville State College, and LaFayette Central School District (which consists of the LaFayette Big Picture School, LaFayette High School, and the Onondaga Nation School). The STEP Program will prepare historically under-represented and economically disadvantage students for college, and their pursuit of careers in mathematics, science, technology, health-related or licensed professions. These services/ activities will be focused on academic development, research experience, professional development, and personal growth.

Our STEP Program is always looking to form new partnerships with local organizations. Our STEP Program is always looking for professionals to come and work with students, run workshops, and develop projects that will encourage them to enter the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) careers.

Monica D. Johns, president and CEO of Clarity Management Consulting Inc., will present Making History: The Contributions of Women and Ethnic Minorities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, a talk about the contributions women and minorities have made to the STEM disciplines, as part of TACNY’s 2011-2012 Junior Cafe Scientifique lecture series.

This presentation will uncover the contributions of women and ethnic minorities in science, technology, engineering and math, disciplines that historically were closed to women and people of color. Johns will go beyond the names that are commonly known and highlight the challenges and triumphs of this courageous group of pioneers who did so much to broaden our intellectual and technological horizons.

Mini Grant Applications due on December 31st

Deadline for submission: December 31, 2011, note the deadline will be extended to January 20, 2012 as a result of web site directory issues.

General Rules
Mini Grants will be offered again this year to NYSTEEA members. The purpose of Mini Grants is to provide support for Technology Education Teachers in their effort to develop new and innovative strategies for teaching and presenting curriculum. Teacher's efforts are supported by funds to purchase necessary materials. There is a total of $1,500 budgeted for this year.

Nominate a colleague that HAS INSPIRED GIRLS TO PURSUE ENGINEERING

The National Engineers Week Foundation has created the DiscoverE Educator Awards. These awards are shining a spotlight on the educators who are inspiring tomorrow's innovation generation. If you know of a teacher that you have worked with in your schools that you feel have inspired girls to pursue engineering, please bring these awards to their attention. An engineer has to nominate them, but you can urge the teacher to share this opportunity with an engineer they know and request his or her support of their nomination.

Winners will be recognized at an event in Washington DC (all expenses paid), receive $2,000, and a 3M digital projector. Unique to this program, engineers and engineering students are part of the nomination process and also eligible to win a trip to Washington, DC. $750 Awards Available for Classroom-to-Home Energy Efficiency Projects

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is offering awards of up to $750 to inspire students to think about energy efficiency and sustainability at home. Funding is available for a minimum of 20 innovative projects that increase students' energy knowledge and awareness, while providing student leadership opportunities and outreach to the community. Proposals must be received by November 30, 2011, and projects must be completed by May 1, 2012. TACNY Sweet Lecture "Effective Speaking and How to Avoid Death by PowerPoint"

More Americans list a fear of public speaking over a fear of dying. Or, as Jerry Seinfeld once put it, Americans would rather be "in the box" than standing above it delivering the eulogy. The Technology Alliance of Central New York (TACNY) will host an exciting presentation on professional speaking techniques as part of TACNY's 2011-2012 Sweet Lecture Series. "Effective Speaking and How to Avoid Death by PowerPoint" is scheduled for Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at 6 pm. Diana Wolgemuth, a training consultant with Dale Carnegie in Syracuse, is the featured speaker. The event will be held at Mawhinney Hall, Room 345 at Onondaga Community College. This free event is open to the public and is part of TACNY's Sweet Lecture Series. Ms. Wolgemuth has been a local training consultant for several years. Prior to her tenure with Dale Carnegie, she was the Learning and Development Manager at Hand Held Products (known today as Honeywell) in Skaneateles for seven years. Her presentation will include:

Steps for Preparing Your Presentation
How to Read Your Audience and Keep Them Engaged
Best Practices for Using PowerPoint.

CNYTEEA's Mission Statement

A mission statement for the Central New York Technology and Engineering Educators' Association

In 1936, the Central New York Industrial Arts Teachers Association was established to provide educational activities and fellowship experiences for teachers who wanted to continue their professional development beyond the college years. Since then, the association has evolved to keep pace with numerous technology and curricular changes which have occurred along with several name changes.

Currently, the mission of the Central New York Technology and Engineering Educators' Association is four fold:

o The association provides educators in the field with ongoing educational experiences (a regular newsletter, industrial tours, school visits, demonstrations) related to the evolving curricula and new technologies. Many of these activities will satisfy some of the professional development requirements which educators in the field currently must achieve.

o The association provides a fellowship forum for educators in the field to collaborate and to share ideas and activities so that all may experience growth, improve instruction and develop new problem solving techniques.

o The association recognizes the accomplishments and achievements of educators in the field for such things as: service, activity and professional development.

o The association supports educators in the field via lobbyists at the state and national level who work to keep Technology Education at the forefront for mandates, funding and continued professional development in an era where these things and our very jobs are in jeopardy.

For the sake of our students, it is paramount that educators in the field enroll, support and participate in the activities of the association which is dedicated to professional development and continued educational growth.

Donald F. Henry (1920 - 2011)

Donald F. Henry July 16, 2011 WW II Veteran Educator Don was born July 15, 1920 in Taylorville, NY to Anselm and Minnie Henry. He passed away peacefully at his daughter's home in Pennellville, NY surrounded by his family following his 91st birthday. Donald and his loving wife, Genevieve were long term residents of Ithaca, NY, having lived the past several years in Bradenton, FL. A 1943 graduate of Oswego State University,Oswego, NY, Don's career included 34 years of teaching Industrial Arts education in Ithaca Schools, having served as Dept. chair, as well as president of NY State Industrial Arts Association.

Dick Enders ~ Rest In Peace

Richard S. Enders, 89 Richard Sayre Enders, 89, of Hendersonville passed away peacefully Sunday, July 24,2011 at Four Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care’s Elizabeth House. He was born in Flushing, NY, son of the late Henry and Mabel Enders and was raised in the Poughkepsie area of upstate NY. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and his loving wife of 63 years, Barbara Plass Enders. During WWII, he was a pilot in the Army Air Core flying B29s and training missions for pilots and navigators. At the conclusion of the war, he returned to NY State University College at Oswego where he earned at Bachelors and Masters Degree in Education. He taught Industrial Arts in Baldwinsville, NY for 30 years where he also served as Department Chairman. In 1967, he received the honor of “NY State Teacher of the Year” and was also recognized in “Who’s Who in American Education”. In past years he was active in the Art League of Henderson County and the First Congregational Church of Hendersoville. He has been an area resident since 1979. He is survived by a son, Barry Roberts Enders and his wife, Miriam, of Los Angeles, CA; a daughter, Susan Enders Armstrong and her husband, Jack, of Colorado Springs, CO; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held at 11a.m. Saturday, August 27, 2011 at the First Congregational Church of Hendersonville, 1735 Fifth Ave. W.

Peter Plumley - 2011 Post-Standard Achievement Award

Tom Frawley would like to draw your attention to an article in today's Post-Standard regarding pending recognition for Peter Plumley at the MOST. Peter has been a great friend of Technology Education locally. CNYTEA collaborated with him on the bridge building competition that is now "Bridge Build-em & Bust-em" at the MOST. Peter was also a frequent and enthusiastic contributor at the Technology booth at our exhibit at the great New York State Fair, for many summers.

Additionally, CNYTEA members wrote in support of Peter's nomination for this Post-Standard Achievement Award recognition.
