We invite you to attend TACNY's Junior Cafe Scientifique speaker series! Download a brochure that includes details of the various lectures for the 2011-12 academic year.
Junior Cafe Scientifique is targeted toward middle school students (although students and adults of all ages are welcome and encouraged to attend) and features an interactive discussion with a different scientist, engineer, or technologist each month. Junior Cafe Scientifique is sponsored by TACNY, the Technology Alliance of Central New York. The talks are held at the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology (MOST), 500 South Franklin Street, in Syracuse's Armory Square, from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. most 3rd Saturdays of the month from September to June. Following the lecture, please stay and explore the MOST as TACNY's guest!

Speaker: Neal M. Abrams, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.
Talk Overview: Ready to be spooked out of your seat? Join the TACNY Jr. Café on October 15th to see the chemistry behind glowing pumpkins, magical genies, bleeding paper, and mysterious fog. Dr. Neal Abrams from SUNY ESF will present a series of interactive Halloween chemistry demonstrations that will be sure to delight young and old alike. Come make your own slimy worms and celebrate the season!
Biography: Dr. Neal Abrams obtained his bachelor’s degree in chemistry and certification in teaching from Ithaca College, completed his doctorate at Penn State University, and was a postdoctoral researcher at Cornell University. At ESF, Neal instructs the general chemistry labs and co-teaches a course in renewable energy. He also directs a chemistry research program centered on renewable energy and is the faculty advisor for the ESF chemistry club.

Founded in 1903 as the Technology Club of Syracuse, the Technology Alliance of Central New York enhances and facilitates the development, growth and advancement of education, awareness and historical appreciation of technology within the Central New York Community. TACNY: Sweet Lecture Series: Nanotechnology: Driving a 21st Century Educational and Economic Renaissance in New York State
The Technology Alliance of Central New York (TACNY) and the Tech Garden will host an exciting presentation on Upstate New York's emerging nanotechnology industry as part of TACNY's 2011-2012 Sweet Lecture Series. "Nanotechnology: Driving a 21st Century Educational and Economic Renaissance in New York State" is scheduled for Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 6 p.m. Dr. Alain E. Kaloyeros, Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer, College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) of the University at Albany-SUNY, is the featured speaker.
The event will be held at the Whitney Applied Technology Center at Onondaga Community College. Admission is free and the event is open to the public. Dr. Kaloyeros will provide an overview of nanotechnology and will describe regional initiatives, including CNSE's partnership with Lockheed Martin and CenterState CEO. Catalyzed by a New York State Assembly investment, the Nanotechnology Innovation and Commercialization Excelerator (NICE) is designed to accelerate critical 21st century technologies and attract additional nanotechnology growth to Central New York.

TACNY ~ Celebration of Technology Awards Banquet
Congratulations to Howie Hollander and the TACNY "Celebration of Technology Awards Banquet" committee for a very successful event held on this past Monday, September 19th. The evening saw many excellent displays, including CNS High School (Marty Miner & students) with their Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car, Henninger/Lincoln City School's STEM Rocketry Club and our own CNYTEEA Display. As most of you know many of our members are also TACNY members and quite of few have been very active in the leadership of the organization, Vern Tryon, Tom Frawley, Steve Poydock and currently Joey Pesce to name a few.
Their Keynote speaker, Deanne Bell, was outstanding! She is a true engineer who has made her fame with her hosting of many television series, including the current ESPN show, Rise Up. Deanne & Howie traveled across the entire region visiting various Technology Education programs (Lincoln Middle School, D.S. Ray Middle School, Cazenovia High School and ESM High School). She was outstanding during her visit to Ray and was a tremendous role model for our female students!

Lincoln Electric will have their "Vrtex 360" Virtual Welding Training at the 75th Celebration

Ana Martinez, NY director for FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), has informed me she is looking for a central NY high school interested in forming a FIRST Robotics Team. The school should be really motivated and have the willingness and capacity to recruit sufficient engineering support for their team. The Technology Alliance of Central New York (TACNY) will host its signature event, the Celebration of Technology Awards Banquet, on September 19, 2011. It will feature Deanne Bell as the guest celebrity speaker. Bell is possibly the most popular woman engineer in the country. As a television personality, she is best known as co-host of PBS's Design Squad and engineer host of DIY Network's Money Hunters. The event is an opportunity for the technology community to recognize the outstanding achievements of local technologists and educators.
TACNY's mission includes fostering innovation by increasing the number of graduates in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The group collaborates with local schools and other educational institutions to generate interest in the STEM disciplines among middle and high school students. Organizers are looking to ignite students' passion about technology, and they believe Bell is just the speaker to do it. See the attached documents for registration and sponsorship information. SURVEY SAYS: 2010-2011 CNYTEA & NYSTEA Membership
Membership in both our local and state was down this past year. Even though our CNY region had the largest NYSTEA membership in the state, our numbers were down. Nearly 20% of those that were not members selected that they missed the Steak Roast. Or they then got too busy with their school business that they never bothered to send the check. This is understandable, but this oversight cannot continue if we are to stay viable in the eyes of the Regents Board.
The encouraging bit of news is that almost all of those who did not join last year to plan on attending this fall's "75th Anniversary Celebration & Annual Steak Roast" on September 14th, 2011 AND do plan joining the local & state associations. We will be reminding eveyone with e-mails, the blog and we will send ONE LETTER (with membership form) in the mail during the summer. Being an optimist.... I do feel a slight pulse ;-)!

Congratulations on a job well done to C.W. NY Electrathon Challenge at the Glen ~ Huge Success!
Four teams from Central New York (Auburn, Baldwinsville, Cazenovia & Cicero North Syracuse) competed against teams from as far away as Canada and Maine. Fifteen teams from around the northeast came to The Glen to race in the first ever Electrathon event at the fabled speedway; it even drew the world record holder from Maine: C. Michael Lewis who came in first. The event was the first ever at the famous Indy/NASCAR road course, and those CNYTEEA members that came really made it an event to remember for over 500 people. KUDOS to our Region's Teacher of the Year, Chris Hurd (Cazenovia Technology Education), for all his hard work in getting this event on track! They are planning on racing two times next year. Hannibal Middle School Technology Model Rocket Team
This past Saturday (June 4th) Hannibal Technology Teacher, Greg Baily and his Middle School Students participated in the Central New York Rocket Team Challenge http://www.most.org/rockets/index.cfm
Greg stated that his students had a great time with the whole process and he was quite impressed on the organization and quality of the event. His 6th grade team, The Rocket Warriors won best design. CNYTEEA Steak Roast & 75th Anniversary Celebration
We have a significant milestone approaching, our organization's 75th Anniversary! It is considered by many to be the oldest organization of it's kind in the state, something to be proud of for sure! We have decided to combined the annual "Steak Roast" with this occasion and to have it in a more central location and at a restaurant. The Fireside Inn in Baldwinsville was selected due to it's location, quality of food at reasonable prices and a few of us have a connection to the host! Steve Poydock, Marty Collins and myself will be meeting in June to begin the planning of this special evening. If you have any input or would like to join us please contact me. Collaborative Project ~ Technology & Social Studies
This past fall, our school district had a "Collaborative Professional Developement Day" so my good friend and 7th Grade Social Studies Teacher, Jon Bick and I decided to do something between our classes. I had an existing "Lego Maglev" activity that I have been working at for the past couple of years. Jon's slant on the activity was that he needed to approach this unit from a historical aspect of mass transportation in the United States... therefore I needed to include rail. Here is a short video clip of Jon and one of our students commenting on the collaboration.
